Just googled the top 10, top 25 and top 50 lists of England’s greatest players and Duncan Edwards appears in the top 50 only and he is in 42nd place in that. However it did say that if his career has lasted longer he would surely have been one of the best ever. It did say he was classed as a defensive midfielder so difficult to compare him to an out and out attacking midfielder. I think the style of football has changed between the 50’s and the current game. Always difficult comparing players from different eras, whatever the sport. I saw one list with Raheem Stirling in it and I never rated him at all.

I was fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with my mates grandad at his house in the mid 1980s the great Jimmy Murphy.
He was assistant manager to Matt Busby and would have been on the Munich flight if he hadn't been with the Wales team at the time of which he was manager and later took them to the quarter final of the World Cup in 1958.
The title Busby Babes is a little misleading because Busby didn't have much to do with the youth team players until Jimmy Murphy use to informed him "I've got another one for you Matt" and they would then be promoted to the first team squad.
He told me stories of how good Duncan Edwards was and tales like the time in the youth team when two down at halftime in one match and Duncan putting his arm around him and saying "don't worry Mr Murphy I will turn it around for you" then going out and scoring a hat trick and winning the game 3-2.
As far as he was concerned he was the best player he ever saw at the age he was, and who could play in virtually any position on the pitch.
